Track 1 : Test Automation, Strategy, Test Leadership and Digital QA & Emerging Technologies

    X Topic Abstract

when I started in a senior position in testing, it was clear that as a test manager, you 'managed the tests'. As the way we've worked in continues to change, that had impacted the kind of leadership needed within the discipline now. Mike Talks will take you through how his role and changed and evolved and how being a senior tester today has changed with the times."

Basically the talk looks at the evolution into agile.

    Speaker Profile

Mike Talks has worked in IT for over 25 years. By necessity, his role and skillset have had to evolve and change over that period as the technologies and ways of working have changed. Mike was a contributor and reviewer for Janet Gregory and Lisa Crispins More Agile Testing. Mike is currently based in Wellington, NZ.

    X Topic Abstract

Development teams invest more than 50% creating and maintaining test data, also most of the test script failures are due test data inconsistency or unavailability, Graphql is API query language tool that can be use to optimise and streamline the test data creation process for manual and automation testing by sourcing test data from multiple sources and expose them thru graphql API endpoints

    X Topic Abstract

As the financial services sector is undoubtedly the most data-intensive sector in the global economy, the influence of Big Data on the sector is tough to overestimate. Due to the increasing and changing customer expectations, business intelligence and data analytics having become a crucial element architectural optimization for banks. There’s a strong requirement for real-time models leveraging the data driven decisions making concept. In this talk, I’ll discuss the prudent approach for a multi-dimensional data exploitation and how Real-time and batch data can be analysed simultaneously at scale- allowing embedded analytic processing into the applications. This in turn enables programmatic decisions based on real-time analysis. We’ll discuss practical use cases for leveraging a real-time data integration pipeline to avoid all problems of classic Extract-Transform-Load tools, which are data processing latency, functional miscomprehension and metadata heterogeneity. The audience will infer the value of leveraging real time architectural approach towards enhancing the value-driven insights, reporting, quality and availability.

    X Topic Abstract

Automation will accelerate the shift in required workforce skills we have seen over the past 15 years. Our research finds that the strongest growth in demand will be for technological skills, the smallest category today, which will rise by 55 percent and by 2030 will represent 17 percent of hours worked, up from 11 percent in 2016. This surge will affect demand for basic digital skills as well as advanced technological skills such as programming. Demand for social and emotional skills such as leadership and managing others will rise by 24 percent, to 22 percent of hours worked. Demand for higher cognitive skills will grow moderately overall, but will rise sharply for some of these skills, especially creativity.

I’ll build a short PPT on our company’s experience and lessons learned from working with various companies to build such a workforce and Roadmap for building a successful and digitally enabled future workforce.

    X Topic Abstract

Lean and Agile are two words that surface in recent years. LEAN and AGILE are not exactly the same approach. The LEAN and AGILE principles are a basis that can be applied to different methods (e.g. Scrum and Kanban).

Lean helps to minimize risk and waste while maximizing customers value. While Agile make processes more flexible and capable of adapting to change quickly to build a product incrementally, step-by-step, delivering it in smaller pieces.

Some ways to keep your tests lean: Tests must be valuable and reliable, Create Flow, tests should be as fast as possible, empower the team, eliminate waste, build integrity in and also seek perfection.

Lean and agile benefits: Reducing development and maintenance costs, total control, visibility and manageability of the development cycle, Less uncertainty, better quality of the final product, continuous improvement.

Hands on experience on Agile ways of working in 21st century. As many organisations are embarking on agile journeys of agile transformations, it has become a buzzword lately. Let's dig deeper and understand what agile is , what we are transforming towards and the difference between agile and scrum.

    Speaker Profile

Varun believes in “being agile” rather than “doing agile” side of things in organizations. For him ‘Agile or Scrum or Kanban or any framework whatsoever.’ is not the goal, rather "Delighting customers, Zero Defects, Quick ROI, Better team work, Excellent Quality & Shortest ‘Time to Market’" are some of the goals.

    Varun focuses specifically on:
    • Creating Business Value for the Customer
    • Results over Rituals(Specifically Scrum Rituals)
    • Outcome over Output
    • Making work and blockers visible(so that work can be managed and blockers can be resolved).
    • Optimising Entire Value delivery chain
    • Encouraging good engineering practices
    • Identifying and eliminating Waste from the Value delivery chain
    • Servant leadership
    • Business Driven Development(where Business / Customer is at the centre of everything we do)
    • “Are we building the right thing” over “Are we building the things right”.
    • Questioning Status Quo wherever required.

He has total 14 yrs exp(in Financial and IT Industry) including 8 yrs working as Scrum Master / Agile Coach ensuring end to end delivery of software applications and products while encouraging Inspection, adaptation & continuous improvement culture (agile culture).

In different periods, she had to built and maintained different kinds of automation frameworks such as UFT, Selenium, and AWS. She had led her team to deliver more than 15 automation projects.

    X Topic Abstract

While software architects have broken their monoliths into event-driven service architectures, many DevOps architects are still building monolithic inspired release pipelines. This results in complex pipeline code, tight integration of process and tools, lengthy diagnostics sessions to fix broken pipelines and puts strains on the underlying resources that build, deploy, test and validate.

In this session we introduce a new approach: Event-driven Continuous Delivery and Operation Automation for modern DevOps! This approach decouples the declaration of processes for delivery and remediation from tooling. It uses an “everything as code” approach which includes deployment, testing, quality gate, observability, promotion and remediation definitions.

One open source tool which implements this new approach is Keptn which was heavily inspired by Google’s SRE practice around SLIs & SLOs. Join us, see Keptn in action and get inspired on what the future of DevOps tooling can look like

    X Topic Abstract

    Key Takeaways:

The biggest issue when it comes to Selenium tests is attempting to interact with the page elements when they are not ready. Trying to click an element before it is available, trying to select a value from a drop down when it is not yet populated, checking an element attribute before it is available - these are some of the most common reasons for failures when it comes to Selenium tests.

Such issues can be avoided by using the WebDriverWait Java class to redesign the way you interact with your page. In this talk i will show you how to get from click to click and wait, from select a drop down value to wait and select, and so on.

I will show you how to replace your standard Selenium commands, like click, with customized waits that you can write to adapt to your test environment conditions. I will show you how to rethink your page interactions from a waiting perspective. And, as an added bonus, how you can replace some of the assertions you write with corresponding wait methods.

    X Topic Abstract

To continuously deliver IT systems at speed with a focus on business value, DevOps teams integrate quality engineering in their way of working.
Our new book supports teams in implementing quality in their DevOps culture, with practical examples, useful knowledge and some theoretical background. For example, it describes how to benefit from a CI/CD pipeline.

    Key takeaways from your session:
-Continuous testing in DevOps is implemented in the pipeline, complemented by some exploratory testing
-Measuring business-oriented indicators on quality and risks supplies information that stakeholders use to establish their confidence
-Based on information from testing in the test environment and monitoring the live environment, AI will predict the future quality and based on this quality forecast defects can already be fixed before any user observes them

    X Topic Abstract

How we can Evolve from Test-Driven Development to Value-Driven Development.

Development teams are often encouraged to focus on the quality of the product and process. The common practice is to increase the velocity of their development cycles. Development teams usually start to figure out how technology works with the intent to deliver ever more output. Unfortunately, teams rarely have the opportunity to connect with real end-user and understand what users value. This hampers the ability to create actual value for their users and thus limits opportunities for the business.

The complete opposite approach is practiced by development teams that are encouraged to focus on the value for the user. These teams have the opportunity to start figuring out how users work, make sure they see the bigger picture and strive to increase the value they create for users in a sustainable way. Development teams need to be supported to change their mindset from inside-out to outside-in thinking and to figure out what their users really value.

    Key Takeaways:
We need to listen to the stories of real users regularly and understand what solutions they will value.
We need to see the bigger picture and discover the most valuable next step (or MVP) continuously.
Testers can help to collect key usage examples (SbE) and structure them in a (BDD) format that all can relate to.
This will boost the development team's ability to apply test-driven principles and create user value in a sustainable way.

Experienced in User Story Mapping (USM), Specification by Example (SbE), Test Driven Development (TDD), Behavior Driven Development (BDD), Test Automation, CI/CD, Scaled Agile (SAFe) frameworks and LEAN principles. Value Driven Development (VDD) author and international speaker.
Motto: Trying-out over thinking-out accelerates the ability to learn. Failure is good, fail fast is even better, and if it is difficult, practice more often, until it becomes easy. Teams that learn to begin with the end-user in mind and explore options systematically will develop and deliver more value at a higher pace.

    X Topic Abstract

Organizations have adopted Agile, Scrum, DevOps, CI/CD practices widely in order to increase their adaptivity. While doing so, they learn that it is impossible to speed up the IT deliverance without a trust in quality. Lean and SAFe have Built in Quality as a core principle, but what does that mean for teams and organizations? In this presentation Derk-Jan will share the challenges he encounters at various organizations. How do teams work and collaborate in order to release valuable increments, and what are approaches to increase the quality awareness? We will discuss the role of tester on team level but also investigate how quality is organized scaled settings where teams need to collaborate on a single increment. How can you organize quality on release level, what types of releases can we distinguish and who is responsible? What do we see in practice and how should it work? In order to have quality built in, we need more than just good tests. But a strategy also. Implementing this on various levels is challenging and has impact on the way we develop our software.

    Take Aways:
. Understand Built in quality is a multi-level challenge that is gaining importance.
. Get a feeling what roles are needed in order to organize testing in scaled agile organizations.
. How to define quality feedback loops and the impact for the development and business

    X Topic Abstract

How to successfully conduct test automation process improvement (TAPI) for continuous development, consisting of iterative software development, continuous testing, and delivery, is the challenge faced by many software organizations. In this paper, we present an experience report on TAPI in one DevOps team in F-Secure (a Finnish software company). The team builds Windows application software and exists in F-Secure’s TAPI culture. The team self-reports high satisfaction and maturity in test automation for continuous development. To study their TAPI, we reviewed a collection of experience notes, team reflection reports and telemetry result reports. Then several meetings were held to discuss the details. We found that based on the understanding of the team, test automation maturity for continuous development is defined as a set of indicators, e.g., the increasing speed to release, improving the productivity of the team, high test efficiency. Second, the team indicated that a set of critical success factors have a major impact on successfully carrying out its TAPI, e.g., incremental approach, the whole team effort, test tool choice and architecture, telemetry. Third, we compare the TAPI practices in the observed team with the practices described in prior literature. The team believes that the existing test automation maturity approaches should include the identified practices like the whole team effort to build a more comprehensive test automation improvement model for the software Industry
